The Storage Facility Is Changing The Memory Of Nuclear Power

Final Project: Habog Facility The Habog storage facility is changing the memory of nuclear power in the Netherlands. Located in the Zealand province of the Netherlands, the Habog is a treatment and storage center for highly radioactive waste. Construction on the building began in 2000. It is operated by Covra, the Central Organization for Radioactive Waste. The Habog gives insight into the history of nuclear power and the anti-nuclear movement in the Netherlands. The most significant aspect of the facility is its transformation of the traditionally closed off image of nuclear waste into an open and artistic space for visitors. The opening of the Habog facility is only the latest event in the history of nuclear power in the Netherlands. It is impossible to discuss nuclear history in Europe without addressing the Chernobyl disaster and its impact on the rest of Europe. Authors Ruud Koopmans and Jan Willem Duyvendak argue, that of the surrounding countries after the Chernobyl disaster, â€Å"only Germany wi tnessed a spectacular rise in the number of anti-nuclear protest events. In France and Switzerland only a small increase took place, and in the Netherlands no change at all was detectable.† However, before the Chernobyl disaster there was already an anti-nuclear movement in the Netherlands.
